Spring Growth illustrates a place in my heart where new life is celebrated with fern fronds unfolding, vines gently swooping in a faint breeze and large split-leaved philodendrons arching toward the light as the viewer strolls down a path safe from all treachery and harm. I spend as much time in this fantasy garden as possible. The image of this space hints strongly of my year spent in Haiti with my parents from 1958 to 1959. This magical, surreal year resulted in a strong sense of tropical hideaways and underwater havens far from my childhood anxiety when confronted with the evening’s beating drums and the daily abject poverty. When you look at this piece I hope you, too, can feel a sense of revived hope for mankind and shelter from life’s more treacherous avenues.
